When it comes to pool remodeling, there’s no getting around a very important question. And that question is the pool remodeling cost. In some cases, the cost of remodeling can be commensurate with the cost of a new pool. And in some cases — an order of magnitude less and quite affordable. It all depends on what the current condition of your pool is, and what you want to get as a result of the remodeling. Consider the situation of a pool with a concrete bowl. For it, we can distinguish the most common types of lining. These are:
- Plaster
- Pebble
- Ceramic tile (mosaic)
- PVC liner
Let’s see what work will need to be done for each type of cladding and how much it might cost. Also, what the result will be.
Plaster cladding
Over time, plaster cracks and peels off in pieces, creating “holes” in the cladding. If they are not fixed in time, the situation will only worsen.
In order to eliminate these “holes” will have to drain the pool and perform preparatory work. They may include priming and other technological processes. And then fill these holes with similar plaster.

What are some of the “cons” that are available? These are:
- Financial losses on draining the pool.
- Expenses for plastering, related materials, labor.
- Deterioration of appearance. It is impossible to accurately select such a composition of plaster, so that the patched “holes” do not differ in color. There are “spots” that spoil the appearance of the pool.
- The process of fixing the “holes” takes several days. During this time, the pool cannot be used.
If the examination of the pool condition reveals that the entire plaster lining tends to peel off, it will have to be removed. And then the pool will have to be completely plastered.
Pebble cladding
Pebble clad pools have the same problems as plastered pools. Therefore, all of the above listed “cons” apply to them in full.
Another common problem that applies to pools with plaster and pebble linings is the risk of mold growth. If mold spots appear on the walls and bottom of such pools, they are almost impossible to remove without damaging the lining.
And this usually leads to the need for repairs.

Cladding with Ceramic Mosaic Tiles
This lining of the pool is the most expensive. It is also expensive to repair. Chipped tiles need to be replaced immediately. Otherwise, the process of splintering tiles will only continue and intensify.
The downside is that even if you have the same tile in stock for repair, it will still be different from the already installed tiles in the pool. Why is this the case? Very simple. The pool tile has been exposed to UV radiation from the sun, chemicals dissolved in the water, and other external factors. All of this affects the change in appearance.

PVC Pool Membrane
Unlike the types of liners already mentioned, PVC pool membrane can last 20+ years with regular maintenance.
It does not have elements that can crack or peel like plaster, pebbles, or tile.
Florida’s warm climate is conducive to the development of mold and mildew on the walls and bottom of the pool. In fact, just getting organic debris in the water is enough for this to happen. And only PVC membrane has protection against this.
For example, the thick Cefil 60 mil reinforced vinyl membrane has a protective coating of acrylic varnish. Antibacterial additives are added to this varnish to reduce the risk of various stains of organic origin (mold, fungus). Even if such stains appear, they can be easily removed with a soft brush and a vinyl liner cleaner.

In addition, the membrane has the following properties:
- High tear and tensile strength. Even the appearance of cracks in the concrete pool bowl will not lead to loss of tightness and water leakage.
- A wide variety of color shades and patterns. Thanks to this, you can pick up any color of water in the pool.
- The presence of anti-slip texture, which reduces the risk of injury.
- High maintainability. Any mechanical damage to the membrane is eliminated quickly and easily by applying a vinyl patch. Including underwater.
- Low cost of the membrane itself and work on its installation compared to other types of cladding.
Another advantage of PVC liner is the possibility of quick and inexpensive replacement. The old membrane is removed, and a new one is installed in its place. The pool can then be used immediately.
So when it comes to the cost of pool repair or remodeling, PVC liner is the most inexpensive option. And with all the qualities listed above, it is also the most practical.
As for the cost of pool remodeling, it depends on many factors that are determined on a case-by-case basis.
