Sooner or later, every pool owner faces the need for a pool remodeling service. This can happen for various reasons, the most common being:

  • Natural aging (wear and tear) of the liner
  • Mechanical damage
  • Appearance of stains of various origins, which cannot be removed
  • The desire to change the appearance of the pool, add additional options

Each of these reasons is enough to begin the reconstruction. And since the pool is usually a favorite place of recreation for the whole family, the question of how long the reconstruction will last is very painful. After all, the pool cannot be used for its intended purpose during this time.

So, how long will the reconstruction take? It’s impossible to give a definite answer to this question. The duration depends on the type of cladding and the extent of the remodeling, which in turn affects the reconstruction budget.

Let’s look at the types of work that will need to be done for a pool covered with plaster and PVC liner.

What’s Included in a Plastered Pool Renovation

Plastering is a type of cladding that requires considerable effort and financial investment when remodeling.

Natural Wear and Tear

With natural wear and tear, the plaster becomes cracked and begins to peel off. In cases where the pool isn’t severely neglected, pool repair is possible. You cannot do without individual “patches” on the holes. There is no guarantee that after a short time the plaster will not start peeling in other places. In this case, a radical “treatment” will be required. It involves the complete removal of the old plaster layer and the application of a new one. This will require draining the pool.
It may take a few days to remove the old layer and clean up the debris. Exactly how long it takes depends on the size of the pool.

Next, the concrete basin is prepared for plastering and then plastered. The new plaster must be applied quickly, within one day. Otherwise, the cladding will have different colors. After that, it will take some time for the plaster to cure.

Mechanical Damage

In this case, the process is relatively easier. You can put “patches” of fresh plaster on the damaged areas. If the damaged place is under water, then the water will have to be drained.
The “minus” is that the “patch” will vary in shade. It is impossible to get exactly the same color even when using exactly the same plaster. This is influenced by several factors, such as air temperature, humidity, and others.
Taking into account the preparatory phase, this work can take several days.

Appearance of stains on cladding and their elimination

Stains on plaster caused by mold or mildew typically penetrate deep into the cladding. They aren’t just on the surface, making them difficult to remove with regular cleaning without damaging the plaster.
This eventually leads to the removal of areas of stained plaster. If there are many such areas, it is advisable to remove all the plaster from the pool and apply a new layer.
How long this can take is described earlier.

Renovation of the Exterior of the Swimming Pool

In this case, it’s hard to provide a specific timeframe for the renovation. It depends on several factors, such as the type of liner will be used, whether changes will be made to the pool bowl, and if new elements will be added or old ones removed.
Additionally, the reconstruction may involve updating filters, pumps, heaters, and other components, all of which will require time to complete.

How a PVC Liner Pool Renovation Works

Compared to plaster liners, a PVC liner pool is much easier to maintain and reconstruct.

Natural Wear and Tear

A quality thick reinforced PVC liner, such as Cefil 60 mil, can last 20+ years with regular maintenance. But if it’s time to change it, it’s quick and easy to do.
The old liner is removed, and a new liner is installed in its place. Depending on the size of the pool, this can take a few days.

Any mechanical damage to the liner is repaired quickly, easily and cheaply. A patch is glued onto the damage, which can be placed even underwater. Taking into account all the preparatory work, this can take up to half an hour.

Removing Stains on PVC Liner

A quality PVC liner is covered with a layer of acrylic lacquer with antibacterial additives. Therefore, the risk of organic stains is minimized. If stains do occur, they are simply removed with a soft brush and PVC liner cleaner. This will take very little time.
Unlike plastering, replacement of the pool liner is not necessary in this case.

Renovation of the Exterior Appearance

There are many collections of PVC membranes with different shades, patterns and textures. Therefore, it is quite easy to change the appearance of the pool. The old liner in this case is removed, and a new one is put in its place.
Depending on the size of the pool, this may only take a few days.
As you can see, in terms of remodeling time, scope of work, and budget, PVC membrane is a significant improvement over plaster liners. So if your pool is not PVC lined, it makes sense to switch to PVC membrane during the remodel.
